Restaurant Székelykapu
Restaurant Székelykapu was opened in the summer of 2006, in Podmaniczky street, in the city centre of Budapest, at a place easy to reach.
The main characteristics of the restaurant are the Transylvanian tastes and atmosphere.
What makes it different from other cuisines is nothing else but spices, green spices such as lovage, parsley, savory and dill are used often. The well-known Szekel cuisine is famous for its meat dishes, so substantial dishes are made there. It is said that housewives spice dishes with love, that makes them so delicious.
Our goal is to make Transylvanian cuisine and gastronomy widely known as much as possible and show everything what Transylvania is. In order to do this we are trying to cook according to the recipes of our grandmothers.
We organize gatherings and invite famous people of Transylvanian birth to give shows.
In every year we have a Transylvanian week in September, which attracts plenty of people.
Beside dishes, we would like to show drinks as well, so our guests can get acquinted with the best wines of Transylvania, the Wines of Transylvanian Princes, with mineral water „Pearl of Hargita” and with the soft drinks made from the water of springs.
And the plum-brandy - the legendary short drink – cannot be missed either.
We know that Szekel gates always contain an inscription which means good wishes, such as: „Peace for the incomer, blessing for the outcomer” or „Greetings to the one who comes to this home, peace with you while you are with us and blessing for you when you leave” These texts always express good wishes and sincere hospitality.
That’s why we chose the name „Székelykapu” (Szekel Gate), referring to the warm-hearted hospitality.
